Discovering the Soul of Oaxaca in the Heart of Sydney
Nestled within the bustling streets of Sydney, Santa Catarina stands as a vibrant tribute to the rich culinary traditions and cultural heritage of Oaxaca, Mexico. Located at Shop 1/152-156 Clarence St, this establishment offers more than just a meal; it provides an immersive journey into the heart of one of Mexico’s most storied regions. From the moment you step through the doors, the atmosphere shifts, transporting guests away from the urban pace of New South Wales and into a space defined by warmth, tradition, and the unmistakable spirit of Oaxacan hospitality.
The philosophy behind Santa Catarina is rooted in the preservation of authentic flavors and the celebration of artisanal craftsmanship. Oaxaca is widely recognized as the gastronomic capital of Mexico, famous for its complex moles, indigenous ingredients, and deep-seated mezcal culture. By bringing these elements to the center of Sydney, the restaurant serves as a bridge between two worlds, inviting diners to explore the nuances of a cuisine that is both ancient and perpetually evolving. Whether you are a long-time enthusiast of Mexican food or a curious newcomer, the experience is designed to be both educational and deeply satisfying.
The Essence of the Santa Catarina Experience
What sets Santa Catarina apart is its unwavering commitment to the integrity of its offerings. The kitchen focuses on techniques that respect the history of the ingredients, ensuring that every dish tells a story of the land from which it originated. The following highlights define the core identity of the restaurant:
Authentic Oaxacan Culinary Traditions: The menu is a curated selection of dishes that honor the complex flavor profiles synonymous with Oaxaca. By utilizing traditional preparation methods and sourcing high-quality ingredients, the kitchen captures the depth of regional staples, offering a genuine taste of Mexico that remains faithful to its roots.
A Curated Mezcal Selection: Central to the identity of Santa Catarina is its dedication to mezcal. As a spirit with profound cultural significance, mezcal is treated with the reverence it deserves. The bar features a thoughtfully selected range of artisanal mezcals, allowing guests to appreciate the diverse profiles created by different agave varieties and production methods.
An Immersive Cultural Atmosphere: The design and ambiance of the space are crafted to reflect the warmth and vibrancy of Oaxacan life. It is a place where the focus is on connection—between the food, the drink, and the people sharing the table. The environment is intentionally welcoming, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a meaningful dining experience in the city.
Commitment to Craftsmanship: Beyond the plate and the glass, the restaurant emphasizes the importance of the human element in food production. By highlighting the work of producers who maintain ancestral practices, Santa Catarina fosters a deeper appreciation for the labor and artistry involved in creating traditional Mexican cuisine and spirits.
The dedication to quality extends to every aspect of the service, ensuring that each guest feels welcomed into a space that values both comfort and culinary excellence. The staff possesses a deep knowledge of the menu and the history behind the mezcals, providing guidance that enhances the overall dining experience. This focus on expertise and hospitality ensures that the restaurant remains a standout destination for those who value authenticity and a genuine connection to the culture they are experiencing.
As Sydney continues to grow as a global culinary hub, Santa Catarina remains a vital contributor to the city's diverse food landscape. It serves as a reminder that food is a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural exchange. By maintaining a focus on the traditions of Oaxaca, the restaurant invites the local community to slow down, savor the complexity of the flavors, and appreciate the artistry that goes into every detail. Whether you are visiting for a quiet evening or a celebratory gathering, Santa Catarina offers a unique opportunity to engage with the spirit of Mexico right in the heart of Sydney.
In conclusion, Santa Catarina is more than just a restaurant; it is a destination for those who seek to understand the depth and beauty of Oaxacan culture. Through its careful attention to culinary detail, its respectful approach to mezcal, and its inviting atmosphere, it has established itself as a significant presence on Clarence Street. For anyone looking to explore the intersection of tradition and modern dining, this Oaxacan restaurant and mezcal bar provides an experience that is as memorable as it is authentic.

My wife and I wanted to get our city fix on, so headed to Sydney from Bathurst on Tuesday 30th!
After a full day of shopping we had the craving for Mexican!
My wife did some googling whilst we having a drink break(Chandon Sparkling)
She found multiple places but most weren't open due to the time of the year!
We settled on Santa Catarina because it was on the way back to our hotel.
We got there around 8.45-9pm and the place was pumping but we managed to get a table for 2 close to the stair entry!
The host was very welcoming and friendly.
We sat down and a minute or so later the delightful waitress 'Alex' came to greet us with a huge warm smile!
The menu was extensive and had plenty of gluten free options(I'm celiac) the wine list was also great, and a good selection by the glass!
'Alex' explained our dishes as well as had great knowledge of the wine list and the wines!
The food came and presented extremely well!
Flavours OMG, they were fantastic, every dish was delicious and the wine chosen went perfectly!
A big thank you to the Chef & kitchen team!
My wife then felt like doing a flight of tequila or Mezcal!
Again, 'Alex' knew exactly what she was talking about and explained what every flight was!
The Mezcal flight was chosen and the bar guy came over and explained which every Mezcal was, where it came from and the order it should sipped in!
Our experience was amazing and we will definitely be going back again when we're next in Sydney!
The only negative we both have is that we couldn't tell if the restaurant was accessible, our son in law is quadriplegic and we he would love to go here!
Thank you to all the staff for making us feel at home.
See you all again soon x

Brilliant concept, design and execution. Mexican cuisine specific to a particular region is an awesome idea. Authentic, well curated and fantastic flavours. We also appreciate the complimentary dessert and liqueur. Staff shared that on weekends they sometimes have bands playing on the makeshift stage. Great atmosphere. More

Great place for upscale Mexican food and drinks. I have been here already for the third time and liked food and atmosphere a lot. Signature for me is the mole tasting option - with 4 very different kinds of mole. Drinks are great as well - good cocktails and an impressive Mescal selection. Finally, the creme brulee was to die for. More

I enjoyed the food here, especially the beef tacos and the duck fat potatoes. Although the kingfish tastes good, $30 for a few tiny pieces is a bit much. We also had to wait a while for the server to come and take our order which was not ideal. More
